Glencoe Skyline top 6 highlights

Glencoe Skyline top 6 highlights

You could create a highlights list as long as your arm when focusing on the Glencoe Skyline trail running event, it's just that good. This arms length list though, has been whittled down to a concise top 6 of highlights for the Glencoe Skyline.

A steady stream of people heading up Curved Ridge

  1. First view of Stob Dearg: Just after the start with the adrenalin pumping we headed south to the Devil's Staircase. This gave us all our first view across the valley of Stob Dearg which was bathed in beautiful morning sunshine.
  2. Hands on Curved Ridge: This was just spectacular in the warm morning sunshine with amazing views down onto Rannoch Moor, and with hands on good dry rock this really did give a much needed confidence boost.
  3. The technical down hills: These really do batter your legs, and there are a lot of them. The ones that stick out in the mind are down to checkpoint 4 and 5 and then the mother of them all, down from Stob Coire nam Beith to checkpoint 11 - this one in particular was treacherous on wet greasy slabs.
  4. The slog up to Sgorr nam Fiannaidh: After the joys of cake and coffee at checkpoint 11 this up hill slog was a real calf killer. It is just relentless, turning your legs to jelly just before you hit Anoach Eagach!!
  5. The traverse across Anoach Eagach: By this time we were firmly in the grip of the mist and rain. Plus, because the pace slows right down you start to feel the cold which is not great. The only element that really took me back up here was what they call the 'Crazy Pinnacles'. They are pinnacles, and yes, they are crazy. Just hang on and keep moving.
  6. The organisation and the marshals: This was a really well run event. Everything from the registration and kit check through to the course marking and the marshalling were all very well organised and executed.
